Absract: This session will discuss the influence of transaction cost economics on strategy research. It will convey the general impact of the TCE lens on the field of strategy, and will trace the specific influence of the theory on key topics such as diversification and alliances. It will conclude with some thoughts on future directions in which TCE could further inform the strategy literature.
Bio: Brian Silverman is the J.R.S. Prichard and Ann Wilson Chair in Management at the University of Toronto’s Rotman School of Management. Prior to rejoining the Rotman School in 2001, Brian was on the faculty at Harvard Business School. He has also been a visiting professor at Columbia University, New York University, Singapore Management University, Université de Paris I, Université de Paris XI, and the Wharton School. Brian's research focuses on the ways in which a firm’s competitive strategy and organizational structure interact to affect its performance – in particular, its ability to access and exploit technological capabilities. His work has appeared in numerous academic journals, including Administrative Science Quarterly, Academy of Management Journal, Journal of Economics and Management Strategy, Journal of Law and Economics, Management Science, Research Policy, Strategic Management Journal, and Strategic Organization. His research has also been featured in venues such as Business Week Online, Sloan Management Review, and The New York Times.
